was on the faculty of Duke University for forty-two years, now holding the rank of Professor Emeritus of Theater Studies and English. He was Founding Director of the Duke University Drama Program from 1975-1985 and chair of the Department of Theater Studies from 2003-2008. At Duke he taught courses in dramatic literature, playwriting, musical theater history and co-taught a course on writing musicals. He was Artistic Director of Summer Theater at Duke from 1972-1984.  He directed scores of professional and university theatrical and operatic productions and has written or edited eleven books and numerous articles on modern and contemporary drama, focusing on gender and gay studies. His plays have been produced around the country and published. Recently he has written librettos for two operas, "Heartbreak Express" (2015, composer George Lam), and "Rumplestiltskin" (2018, composers, George Lam and Ruby Fulton), which had their premieres in New York City. He was Board President of the New York based opera ensemble, Rhymes with Opera, from 2011 to 2017, and is now Board President of the Raven Theatre in Chicago.
